LaSalle had the vision and the audacity to expand the boundaries of New France from a small colony along the St. Lawrence River to include all the land from the Appalachian Mountains to the Rockies and from the Great Lakes south to the Gulf of Mexico.

He was not always loved, but he did build the first ship to sail on the upper Great Lakes. His story is riveting. He formed successful alliances with the western native peoples and the fur trade flourished. New France and Acadia grew in population and importance.

Much of the story takes place in southern Ontario, the Maritimes, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Michigan and along the Mississippi River.

Study Guide:

This curriculum source guide is designed as an instructional unit for teachers and students to be used as a supplement to the book La Salle and the Rise of New France by Janet Snider and Betty Sherwood.  However, the materials in these pages can be used in any study of early explorations in North America; the histories of New France and the Acadians; and the Mississippi River and its tributaries.

This guide helps students learn about the early explorers in North America and the difficulties experienced in exploring a foreign land.  Students can also investigate the immigrant experience in New France and compare this to the experience of recent immigrants to Canada and the United States.  Two activities, "Madeleine de Verchères" and "The Expulsion of the Acadians: A Debate," deal with a consideration of truth and fiction in the history that has been passed down to us.  A map study program might involve tracing the explorers' travels described in the text in an atlas or on a wall map and following this with "Mississippi River Trivia" in the study guide.
