Marguerite Henry's Newbery Honor Book describes life on the tiny island of Chincoteague, where wild horses are rounded up once a year and some of them brought into captivity. Although it describes a bygone era, many children are captivated by the evocation of true incidents and by the wonderful description of the magical atmosphere of Chincoteague Island. It is also an ecological story describing an environment that is only 21 inches above sea level. Through the story of two children who long to buy a wild pony, Phantom and her newborn foal Misty, the reader is introduced to a unique world.

As well as analyzing such literary elements as plot, setting, theme, characterization and style, this novel study examines opportunities for cross-curricular studies in environmental studies and social issues.
